"It was imprudent of us, in the first place, to become authors. We could have become something regular, but we managed not to.
We were lucky, but we were also determined." Roy Blount Jr

"I don’t change the facts to enhance the drama. I think of it the other way round, the drama has got to fit the facts,
and it’s your job as a writer to find the shape in real life."
Hilary Mantel

Mystery Solved!

After digging into stacks of receipts and invoices--going back over a decade--I solved the mystery.

The no-longer mysterious Rose of the Day is Madame Sancy de Parabère, a Boursault rose (according to the Old Rose Adventurer.) She was bred in France and dates from 1873-4. This variety is described variously by contemporary sources as "fragrant...very vigorous, climbing, early flowering" and "thornless...vigorous, hardy in difficult climates, one of the earliest to bloom," and "quite a spring bloomer with abundant flowers...large or very large, fragrant, semi-full and a beautiful bright pink."

It's all true.
